Indian filmmaker BR Chopra dies
Mumbai: One of India's best known producer-director of popular movies, Baldev Raj Chopra, popularly called B R Chopra, died Wednesday, November 5, 2008, due to old age. Chopra celebrated his 95th birthday this year. In 2007, B R Films completed 50 years of film-making in the industry. He could be called one of the founders of what some call 'Bollywood'.
B R Chopra, the elder brother of Yash Chopra and father of filmmaker Ravi Chopra, started his career in 1951 when he directed and produced 'Afsana'.
'Baabul' (2006) by BR Chopra was a commercial successHe made his name with classics such as 'Dhool Ka Phool' (1959), 'Waqt'(1965) and 'Naya Daur' (1957), 'Kanoon' (1958), 'Humraz' (1967), 'Insaf Ka Tarazu' (1980), 'Nikah' (1982)and recently 'Baabul' (2006).
BR Chopra received an M.A from Lahore University in English Literature. His interest in movies started as a movie journalist. After the partition of British India into India and Pakistan in 1947, he moved to Delhi, and then to Bombay (Mumbai).
