Karan Johar to direct 20th Century Fox’s India dreams

MUMBAI: Karan Johar may well be 20th Century Fox and Star India’s route to make a mark in the Bollywood space. 20th Century Fox Film and STAR India are now well on their way to firm up their Bollywood entry strategy.

In two months, the Indian film industry will see Fox Star Studios — a 50:50 joint venture entity between Rupert Murdoch’s television business in the country — and News Corp’s Hollywood Studio.

STAR insiders told ET that the company is currently is in advanced negotiations with Karan Johar to do a slew of films jointly with Dharma Productions. The film will be funded entirely by Fox Star Studios. Fox Star is negotiating to retain all commercial rights for the first 10 years. The IPR of the film will later return to Dharma Productions.

The negations on currently are on the possibility of movies that both parties will co-produce , sources said. “Both Fox and STAR are evaluating the film and entertainment opportunity in India and across the wider Asia,” a STAR spokesperson said.

Vijay Singh, who was roped in from the Tetley Group, London as president, strategy and corporate development, STAR India, will head Fox Star Studios as managing director. Mr Singh will report to a board of directors, which will consist of STAR and Fox officials.
